Vexare Interview Exclusive!

I'm excited to announce that I had a chance to chat with the one and only 15 year old producer/DJ phenom Vexare. With his creative music and style DMR just had to pick the kids brain to see where all of this is coming from. My questions will be in the black and his responses will be in the blue.

So Vexare I know you need no introduction for those who follow your
music, but for those who don't know you...introduce yourself to your fans
and our readers.

Hey I'm Palmer, I’ve been producing Electro and Dubstep under the Alias
VexareIt's so hard to believe sometimes that your 15, when I was 15 I was
playing counter-strike, diablo 2 and volleyball. As for yourself, you've been
producing music for years which is impressive. Are you in school? [If so]
How do your friends react to the new found fame of being considered a
producer/DJ?

Yeah I'm in school, Music for me was kind of a hobby that happened to
take off and now it means a lot to me. My friends, well, I'm not really sure,
most of them aren't really into EDM all that much but I think they find it
interesting at least.

Besides music what other hobbies/interests that you have?

I enjoy drawing & Windsurfing, I play tennis, and I also like poorly
Photoshopping pictures, but I’m pretty sure that doesn’t actually count as a
hobby haha.

How have you adapted to getting recognition and fame for your music,
by that I mean...DUDE How it like for someone your age?

To be completely honest, I kind of don’t know what to make of it… it’s
shocking to say the least

What were your reasons for getting into the music industry and what age
did you start?

I started learning Piano when I was 9, and started fiddling with electronic
production when I was 11-12-ish, and I just mainly did it because it
was fun, before that my only real way of making music was whistling or
humming, which didn’t really do it for me haha.

Why Dubstep/Electro and not other genres?

Well it wasn’t always that way, my tastes have kind of shifted into more
aggressive genres whereas I used to be purely a trance-dance music
listener. Electro and Dubstep kind of grew on me, if not for the musicality,
for the challenge of even making some of the noises in the first place haha.

I've noticed in tracks by Maka and Waeck - Breathe you used the
piano quite prominently, would it be safe to say that the piano was the first
instrument you learned?

Yes, piano was my first and is my only instrument, I may begin drumming
at some point, but until then, all I have is piano and a voice that isn’t
trained for singing.

For the JOC - Find Yourself track you pretty much ruined the original
for me. I can't even listen to the original one anymore and its been deleted
off my iPod list. I must say that's a pretty good accomplishment.

Well I’m sorry to hear that, the original is a masterpiece… haha.

Vexare let me pick your brain for a second. What tools/programs do
you use to create your music and if you could explain to us your process?

I use Reason 5.0 (at some point I should probably update to 6.0) for all
my production work, my songs usually start off as either an 8-bar loop of a
melody, or an 8 bar loop of a drum pattern, depending on the mood I’m in.
from there, I either make the synth to execute the melody and then add in
basses and drums, or I make basses, then write a melody to accompany
them and the drums afterwards.

Is there any tips or tricks that you want to say to aspiring producers/
DJs?

Just make something that clicks with you, if you like it, chances are
someone else will too.

What other artists you listen to?

I’ve been listening to a lot of electro
Dirtyloud, Far Too Loud, Chrizz Luvly, Lucky Date, Feed Me, Katzenwaffe,
Porter Robinson, etc.
But I also have been listening to a lot of robotic dubstep
Cubism, Cyberoptics, Helicopter Showdown, Torqux, Downlink, etc.

Do you draw inspiration from those artists?

Yeah, I often just sit and listen to their songs and dissect every part that
I hear and think why they chose to do that and why it works as well as it
does.

Based off of some Youtube comments, users were comparing you
to established artists such as Porter Robinson, Skrillex, and Datsik. That
being said, how does it feel to be placed in the same conversation as
those artists at such a young age?

I’m not really sure what to make of it… It’s awesome haha

You have an up and coming show in Fresno on the 22nd called
Dubstep Dungeon at the Woodward Park Amphitheater presented by Level
10. How excited are you for that? What are you looking forward to?

Very, I’ll get a chance to drop some of these new tunes so that people
know that I’m not dead haha

How old were you when you did your first live show? How was that
like?

I was 15 and a few months, it was enlightening up there, because unlike
the nerve-racking quality of other performances, it was actually just really
fun. Seeing people dance to your music is the best feeling.

In the next five years...where do you see yourself?

Hopefully still doing this haha

Alright I gotta wrap up this interview, but before we do is there anything
you would like to say to your fans before we go?

I hope you like distorted noises…

Vexare it was really nice of you taking the time out of your busy schedule
to chat with DMR.
Good luck with the show in Fresno.
ACTUALLY WAIT before we conclude. Any chance of hitting up
Vancouver, BC for a live show? We'd love to have you playing at a venue
here simply because I know i'll probably bust my neck head banging to
Breathe.

Haha, I’m trying to work something out, I’ll keep you posted on that

Thanks Vexare for chatting with me

The kid is definitely modest considering all the interest and buzz hes been generating.
If you live in the Fresno area and want to check him out please support him by going to the show. Especially if you got nothing to do on the 22nd.
